The brothers Marouke and Yeprem/Ipranos Ipranosian left an indelible mark on the field of commerce in the last decades of Ottoman history. The trading house they founded in Amasya grew over the years, transforming into a huge chain of stores that sold textiles and various other types of merchandise. The Ipranosian trading network had locations from Constantinople to Amasya, from Adana to Beirut; and even in cities outside the Ottoman Empire, such as Milan, Brussels, and Manchester. In the Ottoman Empire alone, the firm had 40 different locations.
Our newest article, by Lerna K. Yanık, explores the Ipranosian brothers‘ commercial and philanthropic activities, as well as various episodes of their lives. As the article notes, in the early 1920s, the Kemalists who came to power in Turkey confiscated the brothers‘ entire property.
