Beginning in the 19th century, the city of Van was one of the most important Armenian educational centers in the Ottoman Empire.
Robert Tatoyan’s new article is an in-depth study of the Armenian educational institutions in Van. The article brings together information from various primary sources, thus reviving the vibrant educational life of the city.
Many of the individuals who led educational efforts among the city’s Armenians are household names – Mgrdich Khrimian, Hampartsoum Yeramian, Mgrdich Portoukalian, etc. However, the names of many other educators will undoubtedly be new to many of our readers.
The article has been divided into two sections. Today, we present the first section, which consists of a general overview of the educational institutions in Van, covering the period from the 19th century to the Armenian Genocide. The second section of the
article, which provides more detailed information on each educational institution that operated in Van, will be published next month.
