The manufacturing of manisa was one branch of dyed textile manufacturing in the Ottoman Empire. Beginning in the second half of the 19th century, manisa manufacturing became the principal source of income for the majority of Armenians living in Ayntab. The industry grew very quickly in the city, reaching new levels of refinement.
Our newest article explores the craft of manisa weaving and manufacturing among the Armenians of Ayntab.
The article was written by Ani Voskanian, a scholar in Turkish studies. This is her first contribution to Houshamadyan. Ani is already working on another article, soon to be published on our pages, exploring the larger topic of the crafts practiced in Ayntab. We welcome Ani to our team and wish her the best.
